Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden, a pioneer of Tibetan cinema and winner of over 40 awards at film festivals both domestically and internationally and known for his works such as Tharlo and Ballon, has passed away at the age of 53.
He won the Grand Prize at the Tokyo FILMeX three times for his directing films Old Dog (2011), Tharlo (2015), and Balloon (2019), and also received the Best Screenplay Award in the Horizons section at the 75th Venice International Film Festival for Jimpa (2018).
He also focused on nurturing young Tibetan directors and served as one of the producers for the feature debut of Jigme Trinley, One and Four (2021), which was screened in the Competition section at the 34th Tokyo International Film Festival.
